I like cherry bakewells, but they have evolved (or degraded) a long way from the authentic bakewell tart or (more correctly) pudding- as invented and retailed in the very pretty town of Bakewell in the Derbyshire Peak district.

The true Bakewell doesn't have anything to do with fondant icing or glace cherries; the defining ingredients are eggs, almonds and raspberry jam.

When I lived in Sheffield I used to catch the bus out to Bakewell so I could buy myself a bag of authentic Bakewell puddings and eat them on the spot.

Autres temps, autre moeurs.

I have just discovered (to my delight) that Marks and Spencer do a very fair stab at an authentic bakewell.

OH MY! We have nothing like that here, and now I really wish we did! Almonds and rasberry jam... how wonderful!

I wonder if this Marks fellow was a relative of mine... I know my mom's side of the family (from Yorkshire) well, but the Marks folks are a mystery before they got to Virginia.

Marks and Spencer are an upmarket high street store, best known for their clothing. They've been going a long time- probably since the 19th century.

Well, it doesn't look like making your own authentic Bakewell tarts (sorry, I'm an American, and cannot call them pudding) would be terribly difficult, judging by the recipes one finds online.

Yeah, it's a very simple recipe.

Legend has it they were invented when a harrassed cook at the local hotel screwed up his/her recipe for strawberry tart.

I love the idea of "bakewell" as a place.

A very attractive place too. The Derbyshire Peak District (as featured in Pride and Prejudice) has some of the most glorious scenery in England.

Ah--if it's good enough for Ang Lee, it's good enough for me.:)

First picture -- ick!
Second picture -- yum! Can you ship some to Wisconsin? ;-)

Large vs. small "puddings"

Oh, but those seem to be large. I like the idea of the little tarts...

;-)

But I will not be ordering anything right now...just teasing poliphilo about his good fortune!

Post a pudding- heh he he....

That big lop-sided thing in the publicity photo is what a "real" pudding looks like- all rough and rural. The M&S tarts would be frowned on by a purist (not by me.)
